2022 edit: Can you people stop leaving comments in wingdings? I'm not gonna translate every comment individually, good lord.

Also, paste your WingDings into the RIGHT box and it'll translate it to English. Please stop suggesting that I make a new translator to translate WingDings to English.

Responses to suggestions:

"several wingdings dont apear, just a box plz fix"

I'm not having that issue. Must be a problem on your end.

"include an alphebet so people can hand write it please. Thanks!"

"Pls just let us see letters themselves!"

If you want to hand write it, just put what you want to write into the English box and try to recreate the symbols. Or if you just type "A", you'll be able to see what Wingdings character A translates to.

W.D. Gaster and Deltarune: A Comprehensive Guide

Given the new lore we got during the Spamton Sweepstakes I thought I’d compile every bit of Gaster surrounding Deltarune so far, including the new ones!

Who is W.D. Gaster?

Before we dig into Gaster’s presence in Deltarune itself we have to go back a little bit, starting with one fundamental question: Who is W.D. Gaster?

W.D. Gaster is a character that practically exists outside of the game. His existence is merely alluded to and aside from some black and white NPCs (lovingly labelled Gaster Followers) or rooms that only appear under certain conditions (or don’t appear at all and have to be hacked to access!) his existence is null within the game itself.

One of his ‘followers’, “Goner Kid” talks to the player about the possibility of a world where everything functions the same except you don’t exist. This, alongside the dialogue by the rest of his followers led to the theory that one of his creations, an experiment gone wrong, led to him being erased from existence.

Leading up to Deltarune

As Toby Fox has stated before, the idea for Deltarune came to him first before he decided to develop Undertale 1. Because of this there are some hints to Deltarune sprinkled throughout the game. Notably, some of these were added with the Switch release of the game, the latest release of the game at the time before Deltarune came out a few months later.

The most blatant connection is the Clam Girl NPC. She only appears if the player has a fun value between 80 and 89. In all releases of the game she asks if the player’s met her neighbour’s daughter “Suzy”, an obvious parallel to Susie.

In the Switch version of the game’s pacifist epilogue, she has unique line dialogue directly hinting at Deltarune’s imminent release at the time (if you had a fun value of 81).

This takes us to the next bit of evidence: Sans’ Workshop. The workshop itself is quite hard to find naturally and hints at further things regarding Sans’ origins, Gaster and Deltarune.

Here, you can interact with the two drawers on the left, the blueprint and the “strange machine” hidden behind a curtain. Many speculate this is the invention that led to Gaster’s demise. Interacting with the drawer on the far left will prompt a line of dialogue about a photo album.

However, if you talk to Clam Girl beforehand and interact with the drawer you get a unique bit of dialogue.

"don’t forget.” gains a lot of significance due to the title (and lyrics) of the Chapter 1 credits song.

We could discuss at length about what Sans’ role in all of this is considering how he and Papyrus just “showed up” in Snowdin, how he is a returning character in Deltarune and what his overall relationship to Gaster is but I’ll keep it focused on Gaster for the time being.

Outside of Undertale there are some hints towards Gaster’s involvement in Deltarune through the game’s main website. It appears as if the website has been registered and used ever since Undertale’s released and a look through Wayback Machine screenshots give us a glimpse at how the website was like long before Deltarune’s release 2. The first backup of the website ever recorded was on July 1st, 2016 (though the image itself was archived in the Wayback Machine beforehand). At the time, the website contained nothing but a png titled “him.png”.

The image is darkened wingdings text reading “THIS NEXT EXPERIMENT SEEMS VERY VERY INTERESTING”, citing Gaster’s infamous “ENTRY NUMBER SEVENTEEN”.

“ENTRY NUMBER SEVENTEEN

DARK DARKER YET DARKER

THE DARKNESS KEEPS GROWING

THE SHADOWS CUTTING DEEPER

PHOTON READINGS NEGATIVE

THIS NEXT EXPERIMENT

SEEMS

VERY

VERY

INTERESTING

WHAT DO YOU TWO THINK?”

Note that this old tweet by Toby Fox refers to “neither of them”, implying two people like the ones mentioned in "ENTRY NUMBER SEVENTEEN”.

What’s interesting about Gaster's final entry is that his experiment involves darkness, a critical element to Deltarune’s plot and one that gets mentioned even by Toby himself when hinting at Deltarune in a tweet posted on New Year’s Eve, 2015.

The updated him.png afer being brightened up considerably in Photoshop in order to be readable.

The him.png picture then gets updated a couple of months later with a new wingdings text reading "THREE HEROES APPEARED TO BANISH THE ANGELS HEAVEN", citing Ralsei’s Legend from Deltarune directly.

Fast-forward to October 30th, 2018. The official Undertale / Deltarune twitter account begins posting cryptic messages written in all caps

Then, the next day…

The text is very reminiscent of how Gaster speaks (all caps, spacing, repetition of words such as the “VERY, VERY, INTERESTING”, etc.) thus it is safe to assume this is him communicating directly to us. This is further evidenced by how the "warning" on the Deltarune website was written alongside the way the questions are asked during the "survey" part of Chapter 1.

Deltarune Chapter 1 is released to the world under the guise of a “survey program”. The website asks the player for a 24 hour bow of silence so people can be surprised as to what it really is.

The Vessel

Deltarune starts off with a mysterious character creator where you are being asked questions by a mysterious entity. Given how the dialogue during this part of the game seems to continue the way the twitter posts are it is safe to assume this is Gaster speaking directly to the player as we create a “vessel” together.

Something of interest here is the soundtrack to this scene. In the OST the song that plays in the background is titled “ANOTHER HIM”, one of the few songs written in capital letters alongside “THE HOLY” and "THE WORLD REVOLVING". Its leitmotif is the similar to Gaster’s Theme from Undertale.

(If I may add a bit of my own speculation given the song’s name and the name to Gaster’s message in the Deltarune website being called “him.png” I assume what we were creating here was a vessel for Gaster to inhabit, ANOTHER HIM so to speak.)

Right as we finish our creation it gets discarded and our connection to Gaster gets severed. Note how Gaster thanks us for our time similarly as how he does in the tweets leading up to Deltarune's release.

According to people online this scene is referred to as "Goner Maker" in the files for the game which makes sense considering the grey colours of the vessel we've created though I am not sure if this is 100% real. If not, then please make sure to write about it in the replies!

24 hours after the game's release the official twitter account posts this, thanking the players for “answering the survey” but written normally rather than in all caps like Gaster, just like the text that interrupts the creation of the vessel.

The Shadow Crystals

Chapter 1 and 2 both feature two hidden bosses. Beating them will net you a Shadow Crystal and access to each boss' backstory.

In Chapter 1 this is done by going back to Seam after defeating Jevil. This will have unlocked new dialogue options where the player learns what happened to Jevil that he had to get locked up in the first place. Jevil was a normal jester, a funny man, until he met someone who changed his view of the world forever. Ever since, he began spouting non-sense and began to see the world as a game and everyone in it as its participants. Seam, his sole friend, was forced to lock him away for good as his mental state declined. But Jevil's words have stuck with him, and Seam’s view of the world has become “darker, yet darker”, a call back to ENTRY NUMBER SEVENTEEN.

This implies that Jevil one day met Gaster and whatever he said to him changed Jevil’s, and by association, Seam’s view of the world forever.

Similarly, Spamton's story is not too different. After defeating him you can find his fellow salesmen stand near his shop, explaining Spamton's rise to glory and his sudden decline.

If you use your phone while in the Dark World you'll hear the same "garbage noise".

Just like Jevil it appears as if Spamton was influenced by someone and by the end this influence drove both of them mad.

The Dark Crystals you collect after defeating both bosses have uses both outside and inside the Dark World. Using it in the Dark World lets you ‘see through the darkness’ and inspect where you are in the real world. By using it in Chapter 1 you see “toys strewn on the floor” like in the closet you wake up in after closing the fountain or the computer lab from the library in Chapter 2.

All items in the Dark World these also have an equivalent outside (such as your sword becoming a pencil, etc.) and the Shadow Crystals are no different. In the Light World, the crystals become glass. However, unlike most Dark World items, their magical properties remain in the Light World. If you use it while you are alone Kris will see through their hand and if you use it while Susie is following you, Kris will see Susie glaring at them coldly.

A sharp contrast to how Susie actually sees you.

A theory I’ve come across surrounding these crystals is that they show a world where everything is the same except you don’t exist, hence the Dark Worlds just being normal rooms, Kris seeing through their hand as if they weren’t there and Susie glaring due to her never finding any friends without Kris. Though this is merely a theory and further evidence would be required to support this.

The Eggs

Throughout both chapters of Deltarune there is a hidden egg that can be found and put someplace in the world. There is no use to them aside from Temmie counting how many you’ve collected in Chapter 2 (and presumably onwards). It is unknown how these relate to Gaster but it is heavily speculated these are related to him given how Gaster’s possible appearance in Undertale seems to function in a similar manner.

To get to the tree in Chapter 1 you have to go between two rooms with the chance of appearing in the “tree room” being completely random. Similarly, you must do something similar to get a grey door to appear with, who is believed to be, W.D. Gaster inside.

There are spots in the game where you can place the eggs you’ve collected but other than the game pointing out that there are now 2 eggs in Asgore’s fridge (there is one already there beforehand) and the eggpile in the supermarket having “more eggs than usual” there is not much to them as of now.

In the Spamton Sweepstake there is a hidden link if you insert “/man” to the hyperlink. It leads you to a tree much like the one in Chapter 1 and 2 and, clicking behind it, will lead you to a blogpost Noelle posted about a mysterious “special” white egg that appeared in her game and disappeared once she took care of it. Note that this egg is different to the pipis eggs she receives as a ‘gift’ from Spamton as this is described as a white egg while Spamton's are blue.

https://deltarune.com/man/

https://deltarune.com/egg/

The Spamton Sweepstakes

On Spamton’s Sweepstakes there is an ad in particular you can click that will lead you to a set of doors, similar to an advent calendar. While most doors are empty some contain fake prizes but one in particular (third of the bottom row) shows you a chair, partly covered by cloth.

The browser tab while browsing the page changes to “But what if it could…” and clicking on the chair will change it to “…get darker than dark?” This also swaps the chair with a distorted animated version.

“But what if it could get darker than dark?” is an obvious reference to ENTRY NUMBER SEVENTEEN’s iconic line “DARKER, YET DARKER.”

There is also a slim chance that a jumpscare where Spamton’s eyes fly directly towards you before throwing you back to the main page appears though it is uncertain whether this is relevant to the chair itself or if it’s merely there due to it being part of Spamton’s Sweepstake.

The chair being covered in cloth could imply this is the invention “neither of them could fix” in Sans’ Workshop, perhaps the same machine that “shattered him across time and space.”

Closing Remarks

If there's anything I've missed then please let me know on the replies. I'll expand upon my own personal thoughts regarding Gaster and Deltarune in the replies as well.

Undertale: Who Is W. D. Gaster?

By

Jacob Creswell

Published Aug 14, 2021

Secret encounters and hidden lore introduce players to one of Undertale's biggest mysteries: the existence and fate of W.D Gaster.

Undertale has a ton of content that's kept fans digging through the indie RPG over the last five years. Part of what has made the game such a beloved classic is the level of detail that went into its dialogue, characters and environments, including which includes Easter eggs that are enjoyable to find. Few mysteries in recent games have been quite as enigmatic as the dark one surrounding W. D. Gaster.

Fans have uncovered information about a character called W. D. Gaster who seems to have either been cut from the game or deliberately left in the files as a secret. Dataminers also found evidence of a "fun value" that would determine when certain random events in-game would happen. Many of these event were tied to Gaster, only deepening the mystery behind Undertale's strangest character.

RELATED: How Megalovania Became One of Gaming's Most Iconic Boss Battle Themes

Because so little is known about them or their origins, Gaster has been a point of wild speculation. In fact, fans aren't even sure what Gaster looks like outside of two possible sprites. One is a shapeless ghoul with a white head and black body, which resembles the Lost Spirits from Everhood. The second possible sprite is a tall, gaunt figure with no visible features.

Most fans assume the first sprite is the actual Gaster, though even the game's files don't answer the question. The ghoul sprite is called "Mystery Man," while the featureless figure is named "Redacted." Some fans have suggested that both sprites are Gaster, pointing out there are some visible similarities between the two in terms of general body shape, as both have a distinct square-ish torso and a long head.

There's more to this character than just a sprite, as the name W.D Gaster is actually mentioned numerous times in-game by characters known as Gaster Followers. These followers are slightly altered versions of existing characters, typically devoid of color. They can be found nearby the elevators in Hotlands with the right fun value and are the main sources that tie W.D Gaster to Undertale's lore.

RELATED: Fallout: Who IS The Mysterious Stranger, Anyways?

The first of Gaster's Followers will talk about a royal scientist before Alphys who created the CORE, which is the generator that provides the Underground with its power. Said royal scientist, Doctor Gaster, fell into his own creation. The second Gaster Follower expands on this, saying that, when Gaster fell into the CORE, he was scattered across time and space. The final follower reiterates Gaster's brilliance and claims he's listening to their conversation.

The last major piece of information about Gaster can be found in a secret True Lab entry. The room where this dialogue plays can't actually be found without modifying the game files with a save editor, though it's still an important bit of lore that helps players understand who Gaster is. This entry is written entirely in Wingdings and talks about an experiment that the writer thinks will be "very very interesting" while also describing something as being "darker, darker, yet darker." This room is called "room_gaster" in the game files.

RELATED: Audio-Based Indie Game The Vale Broadens Representation & Accessibility

With all of this secret content, Undertale fans have pieced together some significant information. W. D. Gaster (possibly "Wingdings" Gaster after the font) was the royal scientist who performed experiments to create a power source for the Underground. The CORE was one such experiment that would prove successful, though Gaster would fall into it and be shattered across Undertale's possible multiverse, hence why he only appears within the game's files.

There's also a fair amount of speculation on Gaster's relationship with other Undertale characters. For example, given that he's likely named after the typeface he speaks in, many speculate that he's somehow related to Papyrus and Sans. A popular theory is that Gaster was their father, especially given the strange blueprints players can find in Sans' shed near the end of the game. None of this is directly confirmed, though it certainly is possible.

Gaster has been teased to make an appearance in the upcoming sequel Deltarune through the secret True Lab entry appearing on Deltarune's website. Several references to Gaster were featured in Deltarune Chapter 1, including "Gaster's Theme" being sampled and the Entry 17 sound effect sometimes playing when the player tries to call Toriel. While none of these references have expanded on Gaster's lore, it teases that more info on Undertale's strangest secret will be found when Deltarune eventually releases.

Questions and Answers

Question: Who is Gaster in Undertale and Deltarune?

Question: Why should I care about Gaster for Deltarune?

Conclusion

Of all the mysteries in Undertale, the most prevalent one with minor information is that of W. D. Gaster. Everyone who took part in the discussion around Undertale in 2016 probably has a vague idea of him, but not everything in concrete detail. The issue is that there isn’t too much factual information around him.

Undertale has a few events that speak about him, his legacy, and his existence, and Deltarune has a few examples of who he is now and what he might be doing. Still, we really can only speculate after connecting all the dots. So in this Gaster Undertale guide, I’ll provide our info, combine it into the story we know of Gaster, and speculate just a little.

Bottom Line Up-Front

Gaster is a secret character with information about him only found incredibly randomly throughout Undertale. He was the royal scientist before Alphys and most likely the person who created the world of Deltarune. There are tons of hints that he could end up being fully elaborated on in Deltarune due to a large number of suggestions towards him in that game.

Who Was W. D. Gaster?

Well, for a start, W. D. Gaster likely stands for Wing Dings and Aster, both being fonts. The fonts Gaster uses during certain logs or events are always the font Wing Dings. Aster is derived from the name Gaster and the theme of naming characters after fonts. We can imply from this nature that he is a skeleton, like Sans and Papyrus.

Gaster’s Followers

When you have a specific “fun” value randomly picked between 1 and 100 every reset, you can find specific events that almost always relate directly to Gaster. For example, the most direct lore drops happen around fun values 61-63, where a random follower of the scientist appears in Hotland.

These events are improbable, so much so that I couldn’t replicate them through save file editing. So instead, their dialogue is a cryptic backstory on Gaster’s story, and how he ended up in the state he’s in. The first followers’ dialogue is as so:

“It makes sense why ASGORE took so long to hire a new Royal Scientist. After all, the old one… Doctor Gaster. What an act to follow! They say he created the CORE. However, his life… was cut short. One day, he fell into his creation, and…Will Alphys end up the same way?”

From this, we can tell that Gaster was the original Royal Scientist; there was a large gap between him and Alphys. He made the core and fell into “his creation,” which likely means the CORE, but because of the way the dialogue is worded, we can’t say for sure. The second follower’s dialogue is framed like a riddle, like so:

Image from Undertale Fandom Wiki

“Alphys might work faster. But the old Royal Scientist, Doctor W.D. Gaster? One day, he vanished without a trace. They say he shattered across time and space. Ha Ha… how can I say so without fear? I’m holding a piece of him right here.”

This implies Gaster was a particular and slow-moving scientist, working on more intricate and massive projects than Alphys. He was shattered and split across time and space, and a piece of him ended up in this follower’s hands. If we believe the CORE is what he fell into, then the large amounts of magic and geothermal energy stored within might have been the cause for his shattering. The third follower’s dialogue goes like this:

“I understand why ASGORE waited so long to hire a new royal scientist. The previous one… Dr. Gaster. His brilliance was irreplaceable. However, his life… was cut short. One day, his experiments went wrong, and… Well, I needn’t gossip. After all, it’s rude to talk about someone who’s listening.”

Once again, confirming the genius and irreplaceable mind that was W. D. Gaster, we also learn that his falling into his creation resulted from a failed experiment. However, we also understand that he’s listening to this conversation somehow as if he’s some omnipresent force constantly around.

Other “Fun” Events

Each event correlating to the “Fun” value has some relation or thread with it and Gaster, either by directly hinting at him or having some correlation to the events of Deltarune, which I’ll get to a little bit later in this guide.

Mystery Man

If your fun value is exactly 66 and you enter the room between the cheese with the save point, and sans’ telescope in Waterfall, you may come across this door. Unfortunately, it only has a 10% chance to appear, so you may have to edit your save file and reload a lot to see it.

You’ll see this figure by entering the door, which is only ever referred to in the files as “mystery_man.” Interacting with him will make him get scared and disappear, with no dialogue or anything. Likewise, if you leave this hallway, it disappears forever.

This is the look you’ll often see people portraying Gaster with, and while I think it’s the most likely candidate for his appearance, there is absolutely nothing confirming this. He does look like a skeleton that’s been warped or shattered somehow, though, so the connection is clear.

Goner Kid

Goner Kid shares a resemblance to both the Gaster followers and Monster Kid. However, he will only appear at the end of the dock where Undyne threw spears at you if your fun value is 90 or higher. And he has this to say:

“Have you ever thought about a world where everything is exactly the same… Except you don’t exist? Everything functions perfectly without you… Ha, ha… The thought terrifies me…”

If you’re holding an umbrella, it’s this:

“An umbrella…? But it’s not raining. Ha, ha… You know, that does make me feel a little better about this. Thank you. Please forget about me.”

These sound like the doubts and regrets of one W. D. Gaster. He can see the world still running just fine after he got fractured across time and space. However, he no longer exists, at least not wholly, and wants to share these thoughts with the protagonist through this surrogate.

Sound Test

Another one I had a large amount of trouble getting to trigger in-game is the Sound Test. It only plays when heading up from the box room in Snowdin after defeating Papyrus with a fun value of 65. Even though I had all these, the game never wanted to let me in.

You can scroll over to the one called “Gaster’s Theme,” It will prevent you from doing anything other than listening to the entire thing. After you’re done listening, you get some text saying, “Thanks for your feedback! Be seeing you soon!” and get booted out to the fishing room.

You can find it here if you want to listen to Gaster’s theme. It’s an incredibly short melody, which some might claim has leitmotifs throughout Undertale and Deltarune. However, it is just a super simple melody, so they may just be hearing things where there isn’t anything.

Phone Calls

Image from Undertale Fandom Wiki

Now we’re getting into things that are less directly related to Gaster but all part of fun value events, so they’re likely at least meant to be interpreted as some relation or pointer to being about him.

In Snowdin, once again at the box room, going up when your fun value is 2-39 (which means you might have gotten this one usually with no save file editing), you’ll get someone calling the wrong number, asking for a “G…” Obviously, this could be Gaster, or it could be Grillby, Gerson, or some other character who’s name starts with a G, you never really know.

If your fun value is between 40 and 45, you might get a call from Sans in Snowdin, and if it is between 46 and 50, you might get a call from Alphys in Snowdin. These are both jokes, with Sans prank calling you and Alphys trying to order a pizza, but these two characters are especially relevant to Gaster. Alphys for being the royal scientist, and Sans for many reasons I’ll go over later in this guide.

Nightmare Word Search

Image from Undertale Fandom Wiki

Possibly the hardest one to relate to Gaster, if you get a fun value from 56-57, you’ll have an additional character on the word search Papyrus gives you; this one is “Nightmare.”

Nothing about this is explicitly related to the old royal scientist. Still, Ice-E’s character became far more prevalent in Deltarune, as well as the word skeletons appearing on the word search.

Clam Girl

Image from Undertale Fandom Wiki

If you have a fun value between 80-89 and are on a pacifist or neutral route, you may come across this Clam Girl character in Waterfall. This one is especially curious since she usually doesn’t appear at all. Her dialogue goes like this:

“I’m visiting Waterfall from the city. Synchronicity…? My neighbor’s daughter looks about your age. Her name is “Suzy.” I feel like you two should be friends. You have… A neighbor’s blessing!!! Not knowing where I live is no issue. Fate finds a way. In life’s grand scheme, she might be why you came here in the first place…”

If you kill Undyne and then meet the Clam Girl, you get this dialogue:

“I sense a disturbance in the nearby aura… I think you should leave that girl alone.”

After beating the game, you get this dialogue:

“So you never met my neighbor’s daughter. Don’t despair. This world has infinite opportunities. But there’s a limit to the things you can do today. Accepting this is healthy. Take my neighbor’s blessing! And consider this blessing for anything you like!”

If you beat the game and then talk to her after walking by her in the first place, you get this dialogue:

“I wanted to tell you about my neighbor’s daughter. But you walked right by me before I could tell you. Fate has decided that I should not tell you.”

Suppose you specifically beat the game on the Nintendo Switch and talk to her. She will say the most exciting dialogue after turning to a greyscale color scheme, like the goner and Gaster followers.

“So you never met my neighbor’s daughter. But please don’t despair. Because the time that you will meet her… … is fast approaching.”

After this, she disappears, with the same sound effect used when the Mystery Man disappears. The most striking part about this is that chapter 1 of Deltarune was released shortly after the Switch release of Undertale.

This heavily implies the Suzy she was talking about was referring to the Susie we see in Deltarune. Given we know Toby Fox has been working on Deltarune long before Undertale, it isn’t a stretch to say he planned this connection from the start.

Given her grayscale appearance, her sound when disappearing, and the immense foresight leading into a game that loves connecting itself to Gaster, we can assume she was given some piece of Gaster and given the foresight to know about his next project.

Unused Files

There are many unused things left in the files that all contribute to the mystery of Gaster. Please take all of these with a grain of salt; none of them can show up in any version of Undertale and may or may not be foreshadowing or information to take seriously. For all we know, this was discarded on purpose and is never to be brought up again.

Entry Number 17

Image from Undertale Fandom Wiki

The only one I cannot see being confirmed as non-canon, Entry Number 17, would be accessed in the same place all the other log entries are, in the True Lab underneath Alphys’ house.

This one is written entirely in uppercase wingdings, giving us a feel for how Gaster writes. The entry goes like this when translated:

“ENTRY NUMBER SEVENTEEN, DARK, DARKER, YET DARKER. THE DARKNESS KEEPS GROWING, THE SHADOWS CUTTING DEEPER, PHOTON READINGS NEGATIVE. THIS NEXT EXPERIMENT SEEMS VERY, VERY INTERESTING. … WHAT DO YOU TWO THINK”

This same style of writing comes back at the start of Deltarune and a few other times to indicate that it is Gaster speaking. The “Dark, Darker, Yet Darker” part of it, specifically, has become a catchphrase of his.

The “You Two” at the end of the message can refer to various characters. Still, the part about growing darkness and negative photon readings is almost certainly related to Deltarune and the dark fountains in that game.

Room 272

Image from Undertale Fandom Wiki

One of the strangest cut rooms in Undertale contains a mysterious figure referred to in the files as “redacted.” As you walk up to him, he starts fading out; interacting with him gives you the message “REDACTED” in wingdings.

The wingdings do seem to indicate this is Gaster. Still, I think the super unpolished and unfinished look of this room and the simplicity of the message means this might be a scrapped version of the mystery man’s room and not much else.

Leaving this room takes you to the sound test room, where you can again listen to Gaster’s theme.

Room 123

Image from Undertale Fandom Wiki

In another room that looks super unfinished, there’s an NPC you can talk to in the middle that will say there’s a man with a creepy smile behind you, and if you turn around, he disappears.

No sprites were implemented in this, so we can only assume that it might be Gaster, but it could also be Flowey or Sans—nothing concrete here, but maybe another Gaster reference.

References to Gaster in the Normal Game

Regardless of fun values, cut content, or what have you, some references to the past Royal Scientist are blatantly within Undertale; no save file editing or room warping is required.

The Man Who Speaks in Hands

Image from Undertale Fandom Wiki

Sometimes when using the fast travel boat in Undertale, the River Person will say, “Beware of the man who speaks in hands.” Due to Gaster’s nature of only ever talking in Wingdings, it is assumed that is who he refers to.

He can also say, “Beware of the man who came from the other world.” This one is less clear since we have no clue if Gaster originated in the world of Undertale or if he came from a different universe or reality altogether.

The River Person is generally cryptic, but this does give us a strong warning. If we ever met Gaster, at least if he were entirely pieced together in this reality, he would be a force to be reckoned with.

Sans

Sans has a few connections to Gaster outside of just being a skeleton. The workshop behind his house has a strange machine under a curtain, blueprints in handwriting that are entirely indecipherable, a badge, and a poorly drawn picture of 3 people with “don’t forget” written on it.

These can all be interpreted as references to Gaster, the machine might be Sans working on something to bring him back, the handwriting could be in wingdings, the badge might be a badge from working at the lab, and the photo is an apparent reference to Deltarune. The trio of protagonists and “don’t forget” is the game’s central theme.

Also, during the fight with Sans, the weapons he uses are called “Gaster Blaster” in the files, implying he inherited or acquired them from Gaster. Plus, while this isn’t in the game itself, on the official Undertale Tumblr, Sans gives an in-character post that says, “besides, it’s rude to talk about people that are listening, right?” Just like the Gaster follower before.

Names

The final thing to consider is that naming the character Gaster in either Undertale or Deltarune will reset the game to the start. This means that there is definitely something up with Gaster’s omniscient, god-like behavior if he can reset the game similarly to Flowey.

That said, there’s still more info to gain from checking out Deltarune’s information on the man who speaks in hands. While Undertale and Deltarune aren’t necessarily related, Deltarune takes many events, ideas, and especially characters from Undertale, and things in one game can affect the other.

Deltarune Gaster References

Luckily, dealing with Gaster in Deltarune is much easier since none of the references to him have anything to do with fun values, cut rooms, or the like. Nevertheless, Gaster is connected to Deltarune in some way; even the way Deltarune was first introduced makes this clear.

Twitter

In October 2018, a Twitter takeover occurred on the official Undertale Twitter account. The name changed to 6 black boxes (with Gaster being six letters), and many cryptic tweets with odd spacing and in all caps were sent out. After these tweets, a link to https://deltarune.com was sent, and chapter 1 of Deltarune was released.

Potentially the strangest reveal of a video game ever (but it’s Toby Fox, so what did you expect). This event set the entire community on fire because we are all almost entirely sure this was Gaster himself speaking in the same style as entry number 17. Almost definitely confirming the entry as complete canon, too.

Gaster acknowledges the community’s active hunt to track him down and any traces of him and wants to show us something very, very interesting. He wants answers for an incomplete survey, and he’ll contact us again soon. When we got our hands on Deltarune, it opened with a survey, and an omniscient presence speaking in all caps, with weird spacing.

On the release of Deltarune Chapter 2, on the 17th, no less, another set of cryptic tweets got sent out. I especially appreciate the 2nd and 3rd tweets acknowledging the “difficult times” of the three years between releases. But, unfortunately, even being shattered across time and space can’t free you from covid.

Most of this is just more cryptic messaging with little sense or meaning in the style of Gaster, but the second connection does reference the second dark portal getting opened. I wish there were more lore drops for this, but we can only speculate what this second batch means.

Survey Program

At the very opening of Deltarune, you’ll get an incredibly strange first experience, with text remarkably reminiscent of entry number 17 when translated from wingdings. This character creator establishes a connection with you and lets you create a character.

Once you’ve picked your head, torso, and legs, it says you have created a wonderful form and gives you a survey. All this is done over a clear rendition of Gaster’s theme as heard in Undertale, just missing a note. The voice always says “we” instead of I or you, which is mildly unnerving.

After creating the character, a different font tells us our creation will now be discarded and that no one can choose who they are in this world. We don’t know who this other voice is, but we do know that the lack of freedom is a common theme in Deltarune.

None of this has come up again as of Chapter 2, but the files for the character you create reference them as a “goner,” like the kid we saw in Undertale. We can be almost entirely sure this voice is Gaster, there’s very little pointing to the contrary other than him not speaking in wingdings, but I think making the seizure warning unreadable would have probably been bad.

Optional Bosses

Image from Deltarune Fandom Wiki

Both the optional bosses, Spamton and Jevil, have implied connections to Gaster.

For Jevil, Seam, the shopkeeper, mentions he went insane after meeting a “strange someone” and used to be a regular court jester before then, having to get locked away in the castle basement after this particular person drove him to madness.

For Spamton, there’s an even more direct connection. Using your phone anywhere in the dark world will cause the same audio to play as in entry 17, with the description being “It’s just garbage noise.” For example, after defeating Spamton, one of the Addisons in the garbage dump will say he talked to a man who changed his life and gave him success but one day cut him off. They went to check on him, and the phone was hanging off the receiver, and when they went to check, it was “just garbage noise.”

Connections like these aren’t coincidences. Toby usually words things in particular ways to correlate or imply things, and with only two things in the game being called garbage noise, we can be pretty sure this is a direct connection to Gaster. I firmly believe that all the future optional bosses in Deltarune will all be driven insane by Gaster.

The Man with the Eggs

Bit of a weird one. In chapter one, you can go between a room transition and find a hidden room with a man behind a tree who will give you an egg for interacting with it. The text says “he” is behind it, which is reminiscent of the character creation track being called “another him,” and a few other times Gaster is referred to as “him.”

We can find the man in the cars at the beginning of Chapter 2, waving at us happily. In the tree room of Cyber City, you can reencounter him, being given an egg. After interacting with him, inspecting the tree will say, “there was not a man here.”

These occurrences with a seemingly non-existent man are all too strange not to be at least somewhat related to Gaster.

Seam

Image from Deltarune Fandom Wiki

The last piece of information I want to cover in Deltarune is the shopkeeper, Seam, saying Gaster’s classic line. If you talk to him about Jevil, he has this to say:

“Since that time, the strange words he’s said have stuck inside my cotton… And my view of this world has become darker, yet darker.”

Darker, yet darker, the fact that Seam specifically knows this despite not having much of any interaction with Gaster is strange, but it is no doubt a direct reference to him. I wouldn’t be surprised if we happened to hear more about the shopkeeper meeting with the scientist in later chapters.

How to Fight Gaster

From Pingas2000 on Gamejolt

To put it bluntly, you can’t. Quite a few fan mods, animations, and ideas depict a fight with the royal scientist. Still, there isn’t anything in any official Undertale or Deltarune media that so much as visually represents him, much less allows you to fight him.

This picture is from a fangame made by Pingas2000 on Gamejolt, and while I’ve seen this picture tossed around the internet a ton, it isn’t canon. Certainly a cool fangame, though; the boss itself is a bit slow, but still a neat fight. And hey, maybe we might end up fighting him in Deltarune one day.

Questions and Answers

Question: Who is Gaster in Undertale and Deltarune?

Answer: Gaster was the royal scientist before Alphys, before getting split across time and space.

Question: Why should I care about Gaster for Deltarune?

Answer: Gaster is critical to the plot of Deltarune, having been the one who made the tweets revealing the game and the one in the introduction of the game speaking to you.

Conclusion

W. D. Gaster is a name I heard crop up many times during the peak Undertale craze on the internet. Being a part of the fandom and discourse around the game for quite a while, I got incredibly frustrated just not knowing hardly anything about this mad scientist who seemed both omniscient and inherently intelligent.

Having seen the references to Gaster in Deltarune, I can appreciate all the mystery surrounding Gaster and who he was. Each breadcrumb of info is just the right amount of spice, telling you barely less than what you want to know, making you yearn for more. I cannot wait to see more info on Gaster in Deltarune.

The stomach is an organ of the digestive system, specialized in the accumulation and digestion of food. Its anatomy is quite complex; it consists of four parts, two curvatures and receives its blood supply mainly from the celiac trunk. Innervation is provided via the vagus nerves and the celiac plexus.

Thanks to the stomach, every human is technically capable of corroding metal and picking up new hobbies, such as competitive eating. These are possible due to the extremely potent hydrochloric acid and the expandable nature of this organ.

The stomach is the most dilated part of the digestive system, lying between the esophagus and duodenum. More precisely, the stomach spans the region between the cardiac and pyloric orifices of the gastrointestinal tract. It is covered and connected to other organs by peritoneum. The lesser omentum connects the stomach to the liver and then extends around the stomach. The greater omentum then continues inferiorly from the stomach, hanging from it like a curtain. The peritoneum has a convoluted course that requires visualization for a complete understanding, so study the following resources to avoid taking a wrong turn. They trace the trajectory of the peritoneum and provide you with an overview of the entire digestive system, including labeling worksheets and a study unit:

Digestive system

The stomach is located inside the abdominal cavity in a small area called the bed of the stomach, onto which the stomach lies when the body is in a supine position, or lying face up. It spans several regions of the abdomen, including the epigastric, umbilical, left hypochondriac, and left flank regions. The stomach also has some precise anatomical relations and comes in contact with several neighboring structures.

Parts

The stomach consists of several important anatomical parts. The four main sections of the stomach are the cardia, fundus, body, and pyloric part. As the name implies, the cardia surrounds the cardiac orifice, which is the opening between the esophagus and the stomach. It is the first section that ingested food passes through, representing the inflow part. The fundus is the superior dilation of the stomach, which is located superiorly relative to the horizontal plane of the cardiac orifice.

[Anatomy of the stomach (anterior view)]

Next, we have the corpus, or gastric body, which is the largest part of the organ. Finally, the pyloric part represents the outflow section of the stomach, passing stomach contents into the duodenum. The pylorus is further divided into two distinct areas – the pyloric antrum connected to the stomach and the pyloric canal connected to the duodenum. The contents of the pyloric canal enter into the duodenum via the pyloric orifice, the opening and closing of which are controlled by the pyloric sphincter (pylorus), a circular layer of smooth muscle.

As you might notice in the stomach diagram illustrated above, the organ has a characteristic J-shape created by two unequal curvatures. The longer and convex curvature located on the left of the stomach is called the greater curvature, this starts from the cardiac notch that is formed between the esophageal border and fundus. In contrast, the shorter concave curvature found to the right is the lesser curvature. The latter contains a small notch called the angular incisure which marks the line of intersection between the body and pyloric part of the stomach.

Mnemonic

You might be wondering if there's an easy way to remember the parts of the stomach. Of course there is and we're about to tell you! Just remember the phrase ' Cows Find Bulls Passionate', which stands for:

Function

The main function of the stomach involves mechanical and chemical digestion of ingested food. Ingested food enters the stomach from the esophagus via the cardiac orifice, falling into gastric juice produced by the stomach. Repetitive muscle contractions physically churn food particles, breaking them into smaller fragments which are mixed with the gastric juice. The various enzymes and hydrochloric acid (pH 1-2) in the gastric juice break food down even more, forming a semi-liquid substance called chyme. This ultimately passes into the duodenum through the pyloric orifice by a process called gastric peristalsis. Being a muscular organ, the stomach can distend quite a lot, accumulating anywhere between 2 and 3 liters of food.

In addition to digestion, this organ is also involved in a small degree of absorption. Specifically, it can absorb water, caffeine, and a small proportion of ingested ethanol. The stomach also plays a role in controlling secretion and motility within the digestive tract by releasing several hormones such as gastrin, cholecystokinin, secretin, and gastric inhibitory peptide.

Microscopic anatomy

So far, we’ve seen the external, macroscopic structure of the stomach. Let’s dive deeper to see its internal and microscopic structure. The stomach consists of four histological layers called, from interior to exterior, mucosa, submucosa, muscularis externa, and serosa.

[Stomach wall. Stain: H&E. Low magnification.]

When the stomach is empty or contains very small quantities of food, it is in a contracted, shrunken state. The mucosa has a wrinkled aspect, consisting of ridges called gastric folds, or rugae. During distension of the organ, the gastric folds disappear. Along the lesser curvature of the stomach, a temporary, continuous furrow called gastric canal is formed between the gastric folds. This facilitates the passage of saliva and fluids during swallowing.

The mucosa is lined by simple columnar epithelium which is covered by a protective, alkaline mucous layer. The epithelial layer contains numerous invaginations, called gastric pits, that extend deeper into structures called gastric glands. Depending on the part of the stomach, these glands consist of various cell types. Mucous neck cells produce the mucous layer, while parietal cells secrete hydrochloric acid. Chief cells release pepsinogen, an inactive precursor that will transform into the active pepsin enzyme in a low pH environment. In turn, neuroendocrine cells release various hormones mentioned previously.

Moving externally, the next layer is the submucosa. It consists of loose connective tissue containing blood vessels and nerves.

The third layer is called muscularis externa and consists of three smooth muscle sub-layers. From internal to external, they are called inner oblique, middle circular, and external longitudinal. The inner oblique layer is located throughout the entire organ and works in unison with the other layers to produce the physical motion and contractions of the stomach required for digestion. The middle circular layer is located concentrically to the long axis of the stomach throughout the organ and plays an important role in forming the pyloric sphincter. The external longitudinal layer is situated in the two curvatures of the stomach in a longitudinal fashion. Last but not least, the serosa consists of the visceral peritoneum that covers the stomach.

Blood vessels

The overall blood supply of the stomach originates from the abdominal aorta and is provided from two anastomotic systems along the curvatures and several direct branches. The anastomosis along the lesser curvature is created by the union of the right and left gastric arteries which originate from the common hepatic artery and celiac trunk respectively. The greater curvature anastomosis is formed by the union of the right and left gastroomental arteries (gastroepiploic), which originate from the gastroduodenal and splenic arteries respectively.

[Arteries of the stomach, liver and spleen (anterior view)]

The splenic artery also sends out short and posterior gastric arteries, which directly supply the fundus and upper body of the stomach. The pyloric part receives arterial blood from the gastroduodenal artery, which stems from the common hepatic artery. The veins draining the stomach follow the course and nomenclature of the arteries very closely. They ultimately drain into three large vessels called the hepatic portal, splenic, and superior mesenteric veins.

Innervation

The stomach receives involuntary innervation by the autonomic nervous system (ANS). Parasympathetic innervation originates from the anterior and posterior vagal trunks, which stem from the left and right vagus nerves (CN X), respectively. The anterior vagal trunk mainly supplies a portion of the anterior surface of the stomach, as well as the pylorus. The larger posterior vagal trunk innervates the remaining anterior surface, as well as the entire posterior surface. Parasympathetic innervation is responsible for inducing gastric secretion and motility, as well as relaxation of the pyloric sphincter during gastric emptying. The vagus nerves also carry sensations of pain, fullness, and nausea from the stomach.

In contrast, sympathetic innervation is provided by the celiac plexus. The nerve impulses originate from the fifth to twelfth thoracic spinal nerves (T5-T12) and travel to the celiac plexus via the greater splanchnic nerves. Sympathetic innervation is responsible for inhibiting gastric motility and constricting the pyloric sphincter, thus preventing gastric emptying.

Lymphatics

[Lymphatics of the stomach and liver (anterior view)]

The lymphatic drainage of the stomach is variable between individuals but the same regional lymph nodes are generally involved. These are the:

juxtacardial nodes (a.k.a. paracardial nodes),

gastric nodes (of which there are left and right, corresponding to the left and right gastric arteries),

short gastric nodes (corresponding to the short gastric arteries)

gastroomental nodes (a.k.a. gastroepiploic, of which there are left and right following the arteries of the same names),

pyloric nodes (made up of the supra-, infra- (or sub-) and retropyloric groups).

These groups drain into the celiac nodes which drain through the intestinal lymphatic trunk into the cisterna chyli (if present) and from there flow into the thoracic duct. Some drainage will often occur from the stomach to the splenic and superior mesenteric nodes.

Hiatal hernia

A hiatal hernia is a protrusion of part of the stomach into the mediastinum through the esophageal hiatus of the diaphragm. Any gastric part can be involved, but the most common situation is a protrusion of the gastroesophageal junction (sliding hiatal hernia), accounting for 95% of cases. The fundus of the stomach (paraesophageal hiatal hernia), multiple parts, or even the entire organ can herniate into the mediastinum, making the pathology quite varied.

There are several causes of hiatal hernias, such as trauma, congenital malformations, and previous surgery. Perhaps the most common, however, is advanced age which results in weakening of the diaphragm and widening of the esophageal hiatus, facilitating protrusions.

Patients suffering from hiatal hernias are mostly asymptomatic but can complain of non-specific symptoms like heartburn (pyrosis), regurgitation, dysphagia, epigastric discomfort, postprandial fullness, and nausea. Due to their asymptomatic nature, hiatal hernias are mostly diagnosed incidentally during upper endoscopy or imaging performed for other specific reasons.

Asymptomatic hiatal hernias are treated conservatively, managing the symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease for instance. Symptomatic hernias, however, require surgical intervention.
