过去流媒体服务通常分为两大类:SVOD(订阅视频点播)和AVOD(基于广告的免费视频点播)。 Peacock is an American over-the-top video streaming service owned and operated by Peacock TV LLC, a subsidiary of NBCUniversal Media Group. Named after the NBC logo, the service launched on July 15, 2020.[2][3][4] The service primarily features series and film content from NBCUniversal studios and other third-party content providers, including television series, films, news, and sports programming. The service is available in a grandfathered free ad-supported version with limited content, while premium tiers include a larger content library and access to additional NBC Sports, Hallmark Channel, and WWE content.

In December 2022, the service reached 20 million paid subscribers.[5] In March 2023, Peacock reached 22 million paid subscribers.[6] As of October 2023, Peacock reached 30 million paid subscribers.[7]

History[edit]

On January 14, 2019, NBCUniversal announced plans to launch an over-the-top streaming service in 2020, which would feature original and library content, and be available in free advertising-supported and paid ad-free versions.[8] The service would be led by chairman Bonnie Hammer, under the division NBCUniversal Direct-to-Consumer and Digital Enterprises.[8]

On September 17, 2019, it was announced that the service would be named "Peacock", an allusion to the NBC logo. The service announced further details on its initial slate of original programming, including sci-fi series Brave New World (moved from USA Network's slate), limited series Angelyne, crime drama Dr. Death, comedy Rutherford Falls, teen drama One Of Us Is Lying, talk show The Amber Ruffin Show, and reboots and continuations of Battlestar Galactica, Punky Brewster, and Saved by the Bell. It was also announced that library rights to the NBC sitcoms The Office and Parks and Recreation would move exclusively to Peacock in October 2020 and January 2021, respectively.[2][9]

Peacock soft launched for Comcast Xfinity cable subscribers on April 15, 2020, beginning with X1 and Xfinity Flex customers. The service then launched nationally on July 15 of that year.[10][11]

As of August 2021, the service had reached at least 54 million signups.[12] In April 2022, the service reached 28 million monthly active accounts and 13 million paid subscribers, an increase of 40% from the previous quarter. It also reported a 25% increase in engagement year-over-year.[13][14] In September 2022, the service had 30 million monthly active accounts and 15 million paid subscribers, a 70% increase in paid subscribers since the start of 2022.[15] As of December 2022, the service has reached 20 million paid subscribers, with its coverage of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Spanish having been credited for an increase in the fourth quarter of 2022.[5]

Distribution[edit]

Peacock has three tiers of service: Free, Premium, and Premium Plus. The Premium tiers are subscription-based and include Peacock's full library of content, while the Free tier contains a subset of its content. The Free and Premium tiers are advertising-supported, with commercials limited to five minutes per hour. Peacock Premium is included in some services from television service providers, such as Cox, which ended January 15, 2023, and Xfinity. Subscribers to Peacock Premium, whether subscribing directly or receiving service through a provider, can upgrade to the ad-free Premium Plus tier for an additional monthly cost.[11] In January 2023, NBCUniversal discontinued the Free tier for new users: only subscription-based plans are available, with the Free plan only available to existing users, and those whose Premium subscription has lapsed.[16]

On May 6, 2020, a distribution deal with Apple made Peacock available on iOS devices and Apple TV on-launch. Peacock content is also available on the Apple TV app, and the Premium service is available as an in-app subscription.[17] On July 20, 2020, Peacock launched an app for PlayStation 4.[18] On September 21 of that year, Peacock became available on Roku.[19] The company's September 18 agreement for the service narrowly averted a blackout of NBCUniversal's TV Everywhere apps on Roku devices due to a dispute over revenue sharing and advertising inventory assignment.[20][21] On June 8, 2021, Peacock launched an app for Samsung smart TVs.[22][23] On June 24, 2021, Peacock launched an app for Amazon Fire TV and Amazon Fire tablets, such as Fire HD.[24]

In April 2023, as part of its multi-year partnership with Meta Platforms, a Peacock app was launched for Meta Quest 2 and Quest Pro Virtual reality headsets.[25]

DirecTV customers can now watch Peacock TV through their DirecTV subscription. To do this, they must sign up for Peacock Premium or Peacock Premium Plus.[26][27]

Content[edit]

The service is drawn primarily from the NBCUniversal library, including subsidiaries such as Universal Pictures and Universal Television. It is said to include at least 15,000 hours of content on-launch without a subscription, and an additional 5,000 hours of content for Premium subscribers.[28][18][29] Current episodes of NBC series are available on Peacock the day after their premiere for Premium subscribers; non-subscribers will receive them on a week's delay.[18]

Peacock also offers a lineup of about 25 curated digital linear channels, including long-form and digital-originated programming content from NBCUniversal's broadcast and cable properties (such as Today All Day, a digital extension of NBC's morning show Today),[30] as well as third-party content providers. They are designed to emulate a traditional broadcast programming experience (similar to services such as Pluto TV and Xumo, the latter of which was purchased by NBCUniversal parent Comcast in February 2020).[31]

On January 26, 2020, NBC announced plans to stream The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and Late Night with Seth Meyers at 8 and 9 p.m. ET, respectively, ahead of their television premieres on NBC. Many of NBC's affiliate groups criticized the decision out of concern that the "pre-airs" of both late-night talk shows on Peacock would cannibalize viewership for the shows on local NBC stations, and the plans never came to fruition.[32]

On July 6, 2021, Universal announced that it would not renew its pay-one output deal with HBO in favor of bringing its films to Peacock during the pay-one window beginning in 2022. All films will exclusively be available on Peacock during the first and last four months of the 18-month pay-one window (with Universal licensing its live-action films to Amazon Prime Video and its animated films from Illumination and DreamWorks Animation to Netflix in between those two exclusivity windows). The pay-one window for Universal films was initially brought forward to four months after a film's initial theatrical release with this move, but it was later announced on December 9, 2021, that the pay-one window would be brought forward to as little as 45 days after a film's initial theatrical release (though Universal's deals with theater chains regarding the premium video on demand window for these films would be unaffected by this move).[33][34][35]

In January 2022, NBC's Spanish-language sister network Telemundo announced TPlus, a new "content hub" for Spanish-language programming on Peacock Premium that will launch later in the same year to coincide with the FIFA World Cup.[36]

In May 2022, Universal Pictures announced that it would shift three of its films to Peacock in 2023: Shooting Stars, a biographical feature about LeBron James based on his memoir; Praise This, about a youth choir music competition; and a remake of John Woo's 1989 crime drama The Killer.[37][38][39][40][41][42]

In August 2022, NBC announced that its long-running soap opera Days of Our Lives would move exclusively to Peacock Premium beginning September 12 of that year, after a 57-year run on the network. The miniseries spin-off Days of Our Lives: Beyond Salem had previously premiered as a Peacock original series.[43][44] It also announced that next-day streaming of Bravo programs would move to Peacock for the upcoming television season, as NBCUniversal had invoked its option to end an agreement with Hulu for next-day streaming rights for NBC and Bravo programming.[45][46]

On November 30, 2022, live streaming of local NBC stations was added for Premium Plus subscribers. This function was available at launch in 210 markets.[47]

Third-party content[edit]

Lionsgate licenses library content to Peacock which Comcast negotiated during renewal of its carriage of Starz. In turn, NBCUniversal would license content to StarzPlay in the U.S. and internationally.[48][49] On January 16, 2020, Peacock acquired the streaming rights to the Warner Bros. Television series Two and a Half Men and George Lopez, the Paramount Network series Yellowstone, as well as The Matrix films.[50][51] In February 2020, A&E Networks licensed some titles from the A&E and History libraries to Peacock.[52] Peacock also had rights to the Harry Potter film series as part of an existing deal with NBCUniversal networks from October 2020 until August 2021, before WarnerMedia (now Warner Bros. Discovery) took them back on September 1 of that year. The films were then placed on HBO Max.[53][54]

On July 1, 2020, ViacomCBS (now Paramount Global) non-exclusively licensed some of its television series and films to Peacock, such as Everybody Hates Chris, Ray Donovan, and Undercover Boss. The service also held rights to several Paramount Pictures films under a limited exclusivity window from 2021 to 2023.[28]

On July 14, 2020, the service acquired the Canadian drama Departure for a U.S. premiere.[29]

On July 17, 2020, Cinedigm licensed over a dozen films and three streaming channels for Peacock's launch, with hundreds of other films and television episodes to follow.[55]

In January 2021, Peacock added Claudia Rosencrantz and Adrian Woolfe's streaming entertainment news channel LIT, with the platform serving as its U.S. launch partner for an exclusivity period.[56]

On May 18, 2021, NBCUniversal announced that it had acquired the U.S. streaming rights to the Eurovision Song Contest for Peacock under a two-year deal, beginning with the 2021 edition (whose first semifinal was held later that day).[57] The agreement came shortly after NBC reached an agreement with the European Broadcasting Union, which organizes the event, to produce an U.S. music competition series based on the Eurovision format.[58] For 2022, NBC's lead figure skating analyst, Johnny Weir, was added as a commentator for its Eurovision broadcasts.[59] The streaming rights for the contest were renewed for 2023.

On June 10, 2021, Peacock added content from anime streaming service RetroCrush.[60]

On October 31, 2022, NBCUniversal announced an SVOD agreement with Hallmark Media, under which Peacock Premium would add a hub featuring content from Hallmark Channel, Hallmark Movies & Mysteries and Hallmark Drama. The agreement includes both on-demand content from Hallmark's library of original series and made-for-TV movies, and the live, linear feeds of all three networks.[61][62] A similar agreement with Reelz (including true crime programming such as On Patrol: Live) was announced on February 28, 2023. However, due to conflicts with Peacock's exclusivity agreement with WWE, the linear Reelz channel would be blacked out on Peacock when it carries MLW Underground Wrestling.[63]

On April 13, 2023, Peacock added films from Magnolia Pictures.[64]

WWE content[edit]

On January 25, 2021, NBCUniversal, which already televised WWE's professional wrestling weekly programs Raw and NXT on the USA Network, acquired the exclusive U.S. distribution rights to the WWE Network streaming service beginning March 18, 2021. WWE content is carried within a branded channel on Peacock, which includes a selection of WWE content on Peacock's free tier.[65] Premium subscribers have access to the full WWE library, including WWE Network original programming, archive content and all premium live events (pay-per-views) live and on-demand.[66][67] Some WWE content on Peacock has been edited to meet NBCUniversal standards and practices, particularly to remove content considered inappropriate under current standards.[68][69] The standalone WWE Network service for existing U.S. subscribers was shut down on April 4, 2021.[65]

In May 2021, Peacock announced that it had ordered WWE Evil, a documentary series created, produced, and narrated by John Cena that chronicles WWE's most prominent antagonists.[70]

WWE committed to produce a "signature documentary" for the service annually beginning in 2022;[66][67] the first—Wooooo! Becoming Ric Flair—was released in December 2022.[71]

Sports programming[edit]

Peacock carries NBC Sports and Telemundo Deportes programming, including live events either in simulcast with NBC or Telemundo, or exclusive to the service. Many of the standalone subscription services offered under the NBC Sports Gold banner were merged into Peacock Premium shortly after its launch, including Premier League Pass,[72] IndyCar Pass,[73] Figure Skating Pass,[74] Rugby Pass, Snow Pass,[75] motocross[76] and speed skating.[77]

In August 2020, Peacock launched NBC Sports on Peacock, a content hub featuring sports talk shows and radio simulcasts such as PFT Live with Mike Florio, The Dan Patrick Show and The Rich Eisen Show.[78] In September 2020, NBC Sports on Peacock added Brother From Another, a sports and pop culture-themed show co-hosted by former ESPN reporter Michael Smith and sports writer Michael Holley.[79] In the 2021 NFL season, the channel added an NFL studio show, Sunday Night Football Final, hosted by Kathryn Tappen and Chris Simms.[80] Fantasy Football Happy Hour and Fantasy Football Pregame with Matthew Berry premiered for the 2022 season.[81]

In August 2023, EverPass Media signed a multi-year deal to distribute selected Peacock-exclusive sports programming to commercial establishments in the U.S. under the branding Peacock Sports Pass.[82]

Notable sporting events carried or simulcast by Peacock include:

Olympic Games: During the 2020 Summer Olympics, Peacock carried coverage of selected events, as well as a "Tokyo Now" channel featuring exclusive studio programs.[83][84] At the 2022 Winter Olympics, all events were streamed live on Peacock Premium.[85]

National Football League:

All Sunday Night Football and playoff games in simulcast with NBC beginning in the 2021 season.[86][87]

Peacock will carry one exclusive game per-season beginning in 2023 (still shown on NBC in local teams' markets due to NFL anti-siphoning policy) and add a hub featuring NFL Films library content.[86][87] Peacock also exclusively carried one Wild Card game during the 2023 playoffs, marking the first NFL playoff game to be exclusive to streaming (also shown on NBC in local teams' markets due to NFL anti-siphoning policy).[88][89][90] These exclusively-streamed NFL games became the subject of massive fan criticism and media coverage.[91]

Major League Baseball: MLB Sunday Leadoff—exclusive national midday games on Sunday afternoons for Peacock Premium subscribers beginning in the 2022 season.[92][93][94]

Soccer:

News programming[edit]

NBC News's digital streaming channel NBC News Now, and Sky News—a British news channel owned by Comcast subsidiary Sky Group—are carried on Peacock's free tier.[110] NBC News and Sky News had also planned to collaborate on an international news channel for Peacock known as NBC Sky World News,[111][112] but the proposed service was scrapped in August 2020.[113]

In October 2020, during the lead-up to the 2020 presidential election, NBC News launched a new channel on Peacock called "The Choice", which airs original news and opinion programs. At launch, these included The Majority Report with Sam Seder, The Mehdi Hasan Show, and Zerlina.[114][115][116] In July 2021, the channel was rebranded as "The Choice by MSNBC".[117] In 2022, The Choice was folded into a new MSNBC hub, featuring original content and on-demand streaming of selected MSNBC programs.[118]

In January 2021, Peacock premiered The Overview, a weekly series hosted by Gadi Schwartz that features conversations on news topics and "paradigm shifts" impacting the world.[119]

In January 2022, Peacock launched 24/7 streaming local news channels from the NBC Owned Television Stations division. The channels feature simulcast and encore news programming, along with breaking news and original content produced by its NBC station's local news operations. The four markets launched the streaming local news channels on January 20, with stations in Chicago (WMAQ-TV, as NBC Chicago News), Miami (WTVJ, as NBC Miami News), Philadelphia (WCAU, as NBC Philadelphia News) and Boston (NBC 10 Boston/NECN, as NBC Boston News) as launch cities, followed by New York City (WNBC, as NBC New York News) and Los Angeles (KNBC, as NBC Los Angeles News) on March 17, 2022.[120][121] NBCLX launched in 2022 shortly after the local news channels.

International syndication and versions[edit]

In June 2020, Canadian broadcaster Corus Entertainment acquired exclusive English Canadian broadcast rights to Peacock Original programming.[122] In October 2021, Quebecor Content acquired exclusive French Canadian rights to Peacock Original programming for its streaming service, Club Illico.[123]

In December 2021, OSN acquired Peacock's original programming with the Middle Eastern streaming service, OSN+.[124]

In August 2020, NBCUniversal signed a distribution deal with Australian streaming service Stan, including Peacock's original programming until 2022.[125]

On July 29, 2021, Comcast and Sky announced that Peacock would launch in Austria, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom in Q4 2021 and would be available to all Sky Q, Sky Glass, and Now/Wow (in Germany, Ireland, Italy, and the United Kingdom) customers at no extra cost.[126] Peacock was given a soft launch in the UK and Ireland on November 16, 2021, to all Sky and Now subscribers. On January 25, 2022, Peacock further expanded in Sky territories, soft launching in Austria and Germany, followed by Italy on February 15[127] and Switzerland on March 2.[128]

On August 18, 2021, Comcast announced an agreement with Paramount Global (then known as ViacomCBS) to launch SkyShowtime, a joint streaming service combining programming from both companies, including Peacock Originals, which will be based on Peacock's infrastructure.[129] The service would be available in 20 smaller European territories, including four Nordic countries along with Hungary and Poland, where it will replace Paramount Global's Paramount+ (Nordic countries) or its eponymous SVOD service (Hungary and Poland, where it was known as Paramount Play), instead of Peacock and Paramount+ operating separately in those markets.[130] SkyShowtime was released on September 20, 2022, in the Nordics, launched in October 25 in the Netherlands and Portugal, launched in the former Yugoslav countries (except North Macedonia) on December 14 and in the rest of Central and Eastern Europe on February 14, 2023.[131][132][133][134] SkyShowtime finished its expansion by releasing in Spain and Andorra on February 28, 2023.[135]

Peacock was curtailed in Sky territories in January 2023. In December 2023, it was announced that Peacock was shutting down in Sky territories on January 8, 2024, with some Peacock shows being moved to Sky channels and others being available on Hayu.[136]

In March 2023, Comcast's NBCUniversal and Sky and MultiChoice announced a partnership on Showmax in Africa, with NBCU owning 30% of the new entity and MultiChoice owning 70%. The joint venture will harness Peacock technology and include content from Peacock and Sky, as well as African content, such as Showmax Originals and local content from MultiChoice's proprietary channels, including Mzansi Magic, Africa Magic and Maisha Magic at re-launch.[137] The relaunch of the new app is expected to be on February 14, 2024.[138]

In May 2023, NBCUniversal announced an agreement with Viacom18—a joint venture of Reliance Industries and Paramount Global—to launch Peacock in India as a content hub on JioCinema, as part of a larger library agreement.[139]

In December 2023, Comcast CEO Mike Cavanagh announced that there were no plans to launch Peacock as a standalone streaming service outside of the United States, and that instead its content would continue to be distributed through its partnerships and joint ventures, like SkyShowtime, in international markets.[140]

Ads

I definitely love love this app and it’s amazing how all these good movies are here and it’s all completely free but there is one thing and only one thing that keeps on bothering me. No it is not the ads, I understand that those are necessary to gain some money but whenever an ad does come up once it is done the movie/show you are watching skips forward a bit and if you try to rewind it to see the part you missed, the app makes you watch the same ads again for a second time. This is quite annoying because there are some parts of the movie that get skipped but some times that part is important but you are not able to see it. I am not asking for you to take away the ads or change the thing that makes you watch ads for a second time, but all I am asking for is that you fix it so that after you watching an ad it goes back a couple seconds so that you don’t miss/forget anything or at least make it so that it takes you back to the second it stopped. Overall this app is amazing and I am loving it. 10 out of 10.

Terrible tvOS app

If I could avoid using peacock, I would, but there are too many good shows. However, it is still a painfully bad experience. On iOS/iPadOS there is no Picture in Picture support, which is very annoying, and sometimes the audio breaks and I have to exit the thing I’m watching and reopen it. That is annoying, but not too bad. tvOS is the real problem. It works terribly with the new Siri remote. Normally you can go back or forward ten seconds, but with the new Siri remote there is no way to do that. Clicking the forward and back buttons will bring up an orange symbol to go back or forward 10 seconds, but it won’t do anything, and it won’t go away until you tap somewhere else on the remote. If I had this problem in any other app, it would be slightly annoying, but I would just use the normal method of swiping (or rotating with the new circle gesture on the new Siri remote) to get where I need to go. Not only does peacock not support the new circle gesture, the swiping is terrible. This is probably the biggest problem with peacock. Tiny finger movements that would get me forward or back 4 seconds or so in the Apple TV app do nothing. But as soon as I start swiping my finger enough for peacock to react, it moves too fast for me to get even close to what I want. I can end up full minutes away from my target. This has been a problem with the old and new Siri remote, and it needs to be fixed.

马特·斯特劳斯坦言,直到2021年,Peacock才能“真正大步走(arguably really be hitting its stride)”。

When their search for Joy turns from a missing persons report to a potential murder case that posits Stan as the main suspect after a recording of a heated (and seemingly violent) argument between them surfaces, tensions within the family flare, revealing secrets and long-held resentments between the siblings and their father. Further complicating the disappearance is the seemingly chance encounter the family had with Savannah, a stranger with a murky past, who showed up on their doorstep just months earlier. Like their seemingly picture-perfect family, not all is as it seems with Joy's disappearance—with a surprise twist in the ending that causes those closest to her to question what they really knew about her.Read more: The 100 Best Mystery and Thriller Books of All TimeWhat happens at the end of Apples Never Fall? For the majority of the show, besides the first episode, Joy appears in flashbacks and memories as recalled by her children and her husband, who fear that she may not just be missing, but dead. That all changes in the final moments of the penultimate episode, when it's revealed that Joy is not only alive and healthy, but that she's been hiding at Savannah's house in Georgia. In the finale, it's revealed that Joy reached out to Savannah after she fell off her bike and injured herself. Immediately after her accident, she reached out to all of her children for help, but none of them would answer her call after it was revealed years after the fact that she was responsible for tennis star Harry Haddad firing Stan as his coach when he was a student at their tennis academy, an event that had larger repercussions for their family and the academy. It was also a longtime source of tension in their household. After Stan and Joy have a heated argument following her fall (which leads to the sounds on the recording, which turn out to be their tennis trophies falling to the ground and not domestic abuse), she comes across a thank you note from Savannah, who had left the Delaney home in disgrace months earlier after she instigated the reveal that Joy was the one who told Harry's father to stop working with Stan. In the thank you note, Savannah includes her phone number, which Joy calls on a whim, leading to her meeting Savannah at a bar—and leaving her cell phone at home.At the bar, Joy confronts Savannah about lying about her identity and leaving, but because she is tired of her family taking her for granted and doesn't believe that they will search for her, she decides to go with Savannah to her remote home in Georgia, to take a "vacation from being Joy Delaney;" there is limited cell reception and Savannah cuts the cord to the landline once they arrive at her home.Joy is blissfully off the grid in Georgia until she finds out from one of Savannah's neighbors that there's been a hurricane that hit Palm Beach and tells Savannah she needs to go home. Savannah attempts to keep her from leaving, but finally agrees to drive her back to Florida. During the drive, she reveals her true identity and why she came to the Delaneys' house, eventually getting so worked up that she crashes the car and flees the scene of the accident.Read more: Big Little Lies Author Liane Moriarty on Why Her Story Is UniversalWhat is Savannah's actual identity? While looking for a bag to pack her things in to return home, Joy discovers a tote bag filled with fake identification cards, a restraining order against a woman named Lindsay Haddad, and a gun—confirming her suspicions that Savannah has never been who she said she was. Meanwhile, her family back home has also discovered that Savannah was never a woman who was being abused by her boyfriend (Troy discovers that she had stolen her backstory from a daytime talk show) but is instead Lindsay Haddad, the little sister of Stan's former student, Harry. The family confirms this after finding a photograph of her as a child at their home with Harry. The Delaney siblings and Stan reach out to Harry, who explains that he has a restraining order on Lindsay, who has been unstable since he and his father left home to further his tennis career, a situation made worse by Harry and Lindsay's abusive mother. When Lindsay drives Joy home, she reveals why she targeted the Delaneys. She wanted to break up their seemingly perfect family because she blamed them for her unhappy childhood with her abusive mother. She believed that because Harry stopped working with Stan, it gave her father and brother a reason to leave home to find a new coach—and left Lindsay alone with her mother, which made her feel abandoned and unlovable. While Joy and Lindsay have found common ground both feeling unappreciated by their families, Joy realizes that Lindsay is unstable and would rather hurt her than lose her. What does the ending of Apples Never Fall mean for the Delaney family?Although the car crash was severe, Joy is rescued by the police and is able to return to her family in Palm Beach, where she surprises them by reappearing alive and healthy. After Stan is released from prison, the family is forced to reckon with their many secrets in the open. Logan decides to move to Washington to be with Indira, Brooke confronts her misgivings about her engagement, Troy agrees to let his ex-wife have their frozen embryos, and Amy seems to continue her romance with Simon. Stan reveals his father's abusive tendencies and why he "disappeared" throughout their marriage to avoid repeating his family's history and Joy is honest with her family about feeling underappreciated and taken for granted. The Delaneys agree to work together about being more open about their feelings and having fewer secrets from one another. Share on WhatsApp Peacock‘s “Apples Never Fall” is a mystery filled with dark secrets and startling revelations, but it’s also one of the brightest, most beautiful series in recent memory, a sunlit noir that’s as superficially inviting as it is unsettling at its core. In keeping with the themes of novelist Liane Moriarty‘s source material — which tells the story of a seemingly perfect family whose lives unravel as what lies beneath the surface comes to light — the filmmakers created a palette and lighting style that are gorgeous and vivid yet characterized by rough edges hinting at the true nature of the characters and their world.

“The overall storytelling had to do with some horrible things that can happen in very beautiful places,” showrunner Melanie Marnich told IndieWire. “And that juxtaposition of something terrifying has happened with this family while we look around and there’s this saturated beauty. I think there’s a nice tension there. So we really wanted it to be beautiful [but] to feel humid, to feel very Floridian.”

That world of upper-class West Palm Beach, Florida, gave Marnich her initial guiding principles for the visual style. “She was always really interested in a very glossy, bright, colorful palette, which was reflective of West Palm Beach,” cinematographer Robert Humphreys told IndieWire. Humphreys, who shot the first two and last two episodes of the seven-part limited series (the middle three were photographed by Laurie Rose), worked with Marnich and director Chris Sweeney to create a visual language that would provide that glamorous palette while still hinting at the darker tensions running underneath the story.

Humphreys found a cinematic reference point in “The Talented Mr. Ripley,” which had the same combination of seductive beauty and increasing unease that “Apples Never Fall” required. Aside from that, his primary influences were other films about tennis, a sport that is central to the series’ action. “There was one in particular called ‘Borg vs. McEnroe’ that we really enjoyed,” he said. “It had an observational, handheld style that was not super glossy or super slick.” Humphreys found a similar observational approach in “King Richard,” and the two films informed how he approached camera placement and movement. “The ensemble cast took center stage, and we basically recorded their dialogue and action.”

In that tension between the glossy and the observational lies the strength of the show’s visuals, as Humphreys creates pretty, impeccably lit and colorful images (aided by Tony Fanning’s exquisite production design) but undermines them with a handheld style that creates a constant sense of instability; these characters may be living in a beautiful world, but it’s always in danger of crumbling around them. The handheld style had the added benefit of allowing the filmmakers to respond to what the actors were doing in the moment, something that was key in a show revolving around an ensemble in which reaction shots and supporting players in a scene were often more important than the primary action and dialogue.

Ironically, given the importance of the Florida location, most of “Apples Never Fall” was shot on Australia’s Gold Coast. Humphreys said it wasn’t as difficult to double the location as one might think. “I’ve shot in Florida a few times, and I’ve shot on the Gold Coast quite a lot,” he said. “They’re very, very similar. The climate’s similar, the light’s similar, the color’s similar.” The biggest difference was between the Gold Coast’s mountains and West Palm Beach’s flat landscape, which Humphreys said was taken care of with a few visual effects adjustments to take out the hills.

Visual effects were also used in some of the show’s many tennis scenes to help the actors look like expert players. “In some cases, the balls are put in later,” Humphreys said, adding that face replacement was used for particularly challenging moments so that professional tennis players could double for the actors, though not everyone needed it. “Annette Bening is actually a fabulous tennis player, so I don’t think she got much VFX help at all.” For Humphreys, the key to the tennis sequences was creating a sense of immediacy different from what one experiences watching a game on television. “If you watch tennis on TV, it’s video cameras with very long lenses filming from the baseline, but our tennis is very much in your face: handheld right near the actor, because you want to see their thought processes.”

Humphreys tended to use wide lenses in order to get as close to the actors as possible, not just in the tennis scenes but also in the less action-oriented dramatic moments. He feels that such an approach not only gives the viewer a more intimate sense of what the characters are thinking and feeling but also helps the actors forge a more intimate relationship with the camera. “They really feel like they’re in the moment,” Humphreys said. “They’re not like, ‘Oh, where’s the camera?'” Because there are so many characters and they’re all important, Humphreys says the storytelling was more editing-dependent than usual. “When you have five actors in a room talking to each other, you have to shoot a lot of coverage because if you hold a shot of that many people for too long, you end up with a lot of backs of heads.”

Although the imagery in “Apples Never Fall” is often stunning, Humphreys never wanted it to distract from the characters and always made sure the lighting was motivated in a realistic way. “If you look at a frame, I like you to know where the light is coming from, whether it’s a window or a practical lamp or a streetlight or something,” Humphreys said. “It makes the story feel more real and grounded and believable.” Given the strength of the writing and performances, Humphreys felt it was always best to be in service to the material rather than risk visual overkill. “It wasn’t the kind of show where you have long takes and you’re handing the camera off from one actor to another. I don’t like overly stylized photography.”
